Larry and Beth Thayer Share the Joy of Giving Back

Larry and Beth ThayerTell us about your lives today.

We have raised our three children on Cape Cod where we have resided for 49 years. We are both retired from our working careers on Cape Cod. We have four grandchildren. The oldest is finishing up the firefighting academy in Stow, MA and hopes to be a firefighter/EMT. Our next two grandchildren are first year college students, one at Williams College and one at University of New Hampshire. The youngest is a freshman at Tabor Academy. We enjoy following their academic and sport activities. We both volunteer for numerous community organizations, having retired from careers in education and the nonprofit sector. For the past ten years, we have spent our winters in Venice, Florida.

What was a meaningful experience or tradition at Assumption?

Following the Assumption basketball team is one of my fondest memories. I had the good fortune of being a resident advisor with Brother Robert Francis (Bro) and admired him greatly. We met in graduate school. Our graduate school professors were always there for us, and we still have many dear friends from the program.

Why do you support the University with a planned gift?

Hopefully our planned gift will enable many future Assumption students to benefit from the same quality education we received at Assumption. We have also recently pledged to support an incoming Class of 2028 Assumption student for four years through the Access AU Scholarship. Part of this program is that we will be in contact with the student, and we truly look forward to this opportunity.

Why is it important for you to give back to Assumption?

With the rising costs of education, we believe it is our responsibility to give back to the University that was so good to both of us.

What advice would you give to a new graduate?

Take advantage of opportunities when presented. Remember the value of each individual and do good deeds whenever possible.
